Barclays PLC is one of the world’s major banks and financial services providers. It is a British company, based in London, with over 300 years of history and expertise. It is the UK’s second largest bank by assets.

The bank operates in nearly aspect of the banking industry, with an extensive international presence in Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asia.

Barclays PLC operates in wholesale, retail and investment banking, mortgage lending, credit cards, and wealth management.

It has three main business units: Corporate Banking, Investment Banking, and Wealth and Investment management.

Barclays PLC currently operates in more than 50 countries and employees over 132,300.

The origins of the company trace back to two goldsmith bankers, John Freame and Thomas Gould, who started business in London in 1690. The business took on James Barclay (John Freame’s son’s brother-in-law) in 1736.

In 1896 a group of 20 small private family banks (including the one that Freame and Gould founded) joined together to form a new bank called Barclay and Company Limited.

Barclays PLC was created in 1985 when the international and UK operations of Barclays Bank PLC were brought together.
