FLIR Systems – Company Information

FLIR Systems is a leading multinational company that designs, manufactures, produces and markets thermal imaging cameras, components and other related equipment.

The company was founded in 1978 and is publicly listed on the NASDAQ Stock market, in addition to being a component of the S&P 500 index.

FLIR is an acronym for forward-looking infrared imaging systems.

Products that the company offers include thermal imaging systems, measurement and diagnostic systems, threat detection systems, locator systems and visible light imaging systems.

Its products are primarily for use by consumers, science, law-enforcement, military, as well as industry.

Since its inception in 1978 the company has grown both organically through acquisitions. It was originally based in Tigard, Oregon. However, it’s corporate head office was moved to Portland in the 1990s.

In June 1993 Systems went public managing to raise a total of $11.5 million in capital. One year later sales for the company reached a record 47 million. Systems went on to buy the Swedish company Agems Infrared System in 1997, which significantly boosted the company’s market presence.

FLIR Systems has manufacturing and R&D facilities in North Billerica, Stillwater, Oak Ridge, Freeport, West Malling, and West Lafayette.

The company has two main divisions which are Commercial Systems and Government Systems. These divisions are broken down into six main business segments:

Surveillance – which focuses on enhanced imaging and recognition solutions.

Instruments – provides devices that measure image and assess thermal energy gases and other elements.

OME and Emerging Market Segment – develops and manufacturers thermal imaging camera cores as well as components to create thermal and other imaging systems.

Maritime – focuses on electronics and imaging instruments under the RayMarine brands.

Security – offers cameras and video recording systems for home security commercial security and critical infrastructure.

Detection – provides instruments for detection identification and suppression for potential threats in military circumstances.

In 2013 FLIR Systems reported revenue all 1.5 billion dollars met income of $177 million and the total workforce off 2800 employees around the world.

The company focuses on global deployment, superior customer service, rapid product abetment cycles, and innovation of new technologies. The company claims that it’s able to deliver high-value sensor technologies at a range of different price points and specifications to meet the needs of its target market.
