The Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc, also known as the RBS Group, is a British multinational banking and financial services company, headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland.

RBS is a universal bank, with operations in business banking, private banking, wholesale and investment banking, as well as wealth management, insurance, mortgage lending and credit cards.

The RBS Group was formed following a merger of the National Commercial Bank of Scotland and the Royal Bank of Scotland in 1969. The new holding company was called National and Commercial Banking Group Ltd. In 1979 it was renamed The Royal Bank of Scotland Group.

The RBS Group operates in the UK, Europe, the Americas and Asia.

RBS was bailed out by the British taxpayer to the tune of ₤45 billion in 2008. It is 84% owned by the UK government. Its aim is to become privately owned again, i.e. belonging completely to shareholders who trade its shares on the stock exchange.

The company’s primary operations are split into six main divisions:

UK Personal Banking: retail, corporate and commercial banking and wealth management services.

UK Corporate Banking: provides banking, financing, and risk management services to small and medium-sized businesses and UK based multi nationals.

U.S. Retail and Commercial Banking: provides financial services through Citizens Financial Group, which includes Charter One Bank.

Markets & International Banking: essentially the investment banking arm of the Group, the division focuses on enabling companies to achieve global financing, transaction services and risk management objectives.

Private Banking: this division offers banking and investment services to wealthy private and business customers around the world.
