5 Types of Equipment and Resources that You Need for Your Medical Spa

A medical spa, also known as a med spa, is a hybrid clinic made up of a spa and a clinical setting that provides professional services. If you’re thinking about opening a med spa, then you have a pretty lucrative business idea on your hands because more and more people are trying to take better care of their health in many different ways.

First and foremost, if you’re going to open a medical spa, you have to be a skilled medical professional, but there are a few other things that you’re going to need to successfully run your med spa business.

#1: Strategic Marketing Techniques

One tool that all business owners need in their arsenal is the knowledge of basic marketing skills to help promote their business. Most business owners already use a very powerful form of digital marketing and may not even realize it. If you have a social media account for your business, then you have an idea of how social media marketing works. Other types of marketing strategies to be aware of include:

  • SEO (search engine optimization) marketing
  • Inbound and outbound marketing
  • Email marketing
  • Content marketing

Traditional forms of marketing, such as newspaper ads, are still very effective as well. Also, make sure that you’re building good relationships with the people in your community so that they can refer you to their friends and family.

#2: Professionally Trained Staff

Again, a med spa is a medical setting— and also a spa— so you’re going to need to hire a variety of professionals to help run your business. Your main staff should consist of physicians and physician assistants (PAs), registered nurses (RNs), and maybe even nurse practitioners (NPs). Because this is also a spa, depending on the services you offer, you may also need to hire the following:

  • Dermatologists
  • Hair stylists
  • Nail technicians

Everyone on your team that you hire should be a licensed professional. You don’t want to gain a bad reputation for putting your clients at risk for bad service, infections, and other things that can put their health at risk.

#3: Medical and Spa Equipment

The most obvious equipment you’re going to need for your practice is both medical and spa equipment because this is how you’re going to be able to perform your services. Some of the basic spa equipment that you’ll need will be facial beds and tables, facial steamers and scrubbers, magnifying lamps, massage chairs, oxygen and paraffin machines, and sterilizers. As for medical equipment, you’re going to need a chiropractic table, medical exam tables and chairs, and basic medical equipment, such as a stethoscope. Again, depending on the services you offer, you may also need:

  • Barber chairs
  • Hair steamers and dryers
  • Manicure and pedicure bowls
  • Nails drills and polishers
  • Tattoo beds and tables

Also, don’t forget the basic office supplies that the majority of businesses use.

#4: Insurance for Your Business

Even if you hire the best professionals for your business, you’re still going to need certain types of insurance to protect your business. Business insurance is also legally required to operate your business. Some types of insurance you’re going to need to include:

  • General liability insurance covers lawsuits that claim property damage and accidents.
  • Medical malpractice insurance covers lawsuits that claim injury from the services you provide.
  • Property insurance covers the cost of repairs and possibly lost wages if your business has to close due to damage.
  • Workers’ compensation insurance covers the medical costs and lost wages of your employees if they become injured on the job.

#5: Business Software

Last, but not least, you’re going to need business software for your med spa business. Business software is a set of computer applications that help you perform certain business tasks and run your business more efficiently, and when you have medical spa software, your applications are tailored to your industry’s specific needs. Not only does this type of software benefit you as a business owner, but it will also benefit your employees and your clients as well.

If you’re just starting up your med spa business, don’t forget that you’re going to need to write up a business plan and secure funding for your practice, as you would with any type of business. Your business plan will help you get the financing you need to secure a building and buy your equipment.

Keep in mind that this is just a brief overview of what you’re going to need. Depending on your skill level, the services you choose to offer, and even your location you may need more or less than what’s listed here.
