Driving in Windy Conditions? Here Are a Few Things to Keep in Mind

A lot of people think of driving as more than just a responsibility. Often, if the road condition is well and the weather is to one’s liking, driving can be almost meditative. But, on the contrary, if the driving conditions are less than ideal, it can take a toll on one’s mind.

Lately, we have been experiencing more and more extreme weather conditions. Driving in difficult weather conditions, such as in severe winds, is a daunting task even for the most experienced of drivers. So if you live in a place with windy conditions, here are a few things to keep in mind if you are driving.

1.    Keep An Eye On The Weather.

Before going out, you should be aware of the forecasted weather so that you can plan your trip accordingly and prepare anything you might need. This is especially important for new drivers. You should also be aware that underpasses and bridges are windier during such conditions and choose a route beforehand.

2.    Slow Down.

It is more difficult to control your vehicle in extreme weather conditions. This goes for both cars and motorcycles. In preparation for this, plan to leave ahead of time and drive under the speed limit. This will enable you to stay more in control and panic less.

3.    Watch Out For Large Vehicles.

We have all seen videos of large semi-trucks and cargo vehicles swaying in the wind at some point. According to Attorney Lin McCraw of McCraw Law Group, “People are often unaware of how strong winds can get especially in open areas or through fields. High-profile vehicles like trucks can often sway in such conditions and can even topple over. If someone is driving in such conditions, they should give buses, vans, and trucks avoided.”

4.    Keep a Safe Distance

Apart from high-profile vehicles, there are other dangers on the road in extreme conditions. While driving in extreme winds, it is best to keep a large distance from other motorists, especially in low visibility conditions. Often novice drivers and motorcyclists can slip in such conditions or suddenly push the brakes, so you should keep a safe distance to avoid a collision. Many times there is debris on the road, it is best to stay away from that too.

5.    Keep a Firm Grip on the Steering Wheel

Dust or rain can also be accompanied by strong winds. This can lead to low visibility and you must be extra vigilant when visibility on the road is poor. While turning the headlights will help you and others see, you need to keep a close eye on the road ahead and be ready to push the brake or move the car if something appears suddenly. To ensure that you are in control of your vehicle at all times, you must keep your hands on the steering wheel. Never text and drive, especially in poor conditions.

6.    Ensure That Your Tires Are Properly Inflated

Before driving in extreme conditions, you must make sure that your tires are properly inflated. If your vehicle’s tires are over or underinflated, you will have reduced traction on the road and that can increase the chances of your vehicle slipping.

Apart from all these tips, you must make sure that you remain calm even if something goes wrong. If at any point you feel that the wind conditions are too extreme, it is important that you park at the side of the road and only resume driving when you feel the conditions are right. You should also steer clear of overhead telephone and power lines if you do pull over. If you are a new driver and not comfortable driving in extreme winds, it is best to ask someone else to drive you.
