Things you might not have considered when starting up your business

Starting a business is one of the most exciting, and terrifying things you can do. Unfortunately, it’s not as simple as coming up with an idea and getting started, there are a lot of other things you might need to consider that you may not have even thought of. Here are a few things you should think about to make sure everything runs as smoothly as possible.

Every business needs some form of legal protection, whether that is insurance or a commercial litigation lawyer. Someone to ensure that you are going about things in the right, legal way, and backing you up if anything does go wrong.

Having the right contracts now will save you stress and money in the long run, and being able to turn to someone if there are disputes with your customers or suppliers will help keep you on the right path.

Branding

Branding is so much more than a snazzy logo and a nice font. One thing you will want to check when you’ve chosen your business name is that you are able to get the domain name you want, as well as the username on things such as Instagram and Twitter. Even if you’re not planning on using those platforms, you need to protect your brand, so it’s worth doing a quick search beforehand.

Growth

It can be easy to get ahead of yourself and start planning your Dubai, Sydney and LA offices before you’ve even made your first sale, but the same can be true for the other way – holding yourself back and not knowing how you can scale up the business when the time is right. Think carefully about the direction you want to take the business in the long-term, but don’t start too big, it’s important to be realistic as well as ambitious.

What’s your backup plan?

No one wants to think of their business failing, and it’s certainly not the mindset to start off with, but it is important to have some backup plans or ideas for how to recoup the costs if you don’t make the sales you’ve projected. Think about minimum sales you need to make to break even, and what you can do to get there – from here, the only way is up.

Marketing

It’s not enough to simply start a business; people need to know about your products and services. Do a bit of market research to see what else is out there, and what makes your company unique, and then shout from the rooftops. Marketing and promotion is one area where you can’t be shy, or complacent because, without customers, you don’t have a business.

Once you’ve considered these things, and really thought about the direction you want to go in, it can be easy to hesitate and hold back, however, this is the perfect time to take a leap of faith and go for it. The first step to your business becoming a huge success!
