The origins of the company trace back to two goldsmith bankers, John Freame and Thomas Gould, who started business in London in 1690. The business took on James Barclay (John Freame’s son’s brother-in-law) in 1736.
In 1896 a group of 20 small private family banks (including the one that Freame and Gould founded) joined together to form a new bank called Barclay and Company Limited.
Barclays PLC was created in 1985 when the international and UK operations of Barclays Bank PLC were brought together.
