Aon’s main services include insurance and reinsurance brokerage, outsourcing solutions, risk management, and human resource solutions, retail brokerage, retirement, compensation, and investment consulting.
It has a employee base of approximately 69,000 people.
The company was created in 1982, following a merger between the Ryan Insurance Group and the Combined Insurance Company of America. Although it was not until 1987 that the company was renamed Aon – a Gaelic word that means ‘oneness’.
During the 1980s and 1990s the company made a number of strategic acquisitions which helped drive Aon’s expansion and growth in the global insurance marketplace – acquiring some of the largest companies in the insurance and consulting.
Aon is comprised of three main business units:
Risk Solutions: risk management services and insurance products for individuals and businesses.
Benfield: reinsurance intermediary and full-service capital advisor.
Hewitt: provider of human capital and management consulting services.
