Apple is reportedly preparing for a significant product launch event in the coming weeks. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple will soon announce its first lineup of Macs powered by new AI-focused M4 chips, along with updated lower-end iPads.
This news comes shortly after Apple’s September 9 event, where it unveiled a range of new products and features, including the iPhone 16, Apple Watch Series 10, and new AirPods.
First Wave of M4 Macs
According to Gurman, the Mac event “is shaping up to follow the exact road map” that he outlined in April. In his “Power On” newsletter, Gurman said that Apple is expected to introduce updated 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, with a “new low-end 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M4 chip,” as well as “new high-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, each with two pro-level M4 chip options.” According to MacRumors, no major design changes are expected for these laptops this year. In addition to the MacBook Pro, Apple plans to update the iMac with the M4 chip.
Redesigned Mac mini
The Mac mini is expected to receive an update with M4 and M4 Pro chips too.
In a previous report, Gurman reported that the Mac mini computer will undergo a redesign to become nearly as small as an Apple TV, marking a significant size reduction. This new Mac mini will reportedly eliminate USB-A ports, indicating a shift towards more modern connectivity options like USB-C and Thunderbolt.
Seventh-Generation iPad Mini
On the tablet front, Apple is anticipated to unveil the seventh-generation iPad mini. The new model is rumored to feature:
- A Faster Chip: Upgraded processor for improved performance.
- Enhanced Cameras: Upgraded front and rear cameras for better photo and video capabilities.
- Display Improvements: A fix for the “jelly scrolling” effect observed in portrait orientation on previous models.
- Connectivity Upgrades: Support for Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.
- New Colors: Introduction of new color options to refresh the lineup.
Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously indicated that the next iPad mini would enter mass production in the second half of 2024, aligning with Gurman’s report of a new version this yer.
What to Expect at the Upcoming Apple Event
- MacBook Pro: Updated 14-inch and 16-inch models featuring M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max chips, offering enhanced performance but retaining the current design.
- iMac: Refreshed with the M4 chip, potentially boosting performance significantly. Possible updates to accessories like the Magic Keyboard and Mouse, transitioning to USB-C.
- Mac mini: Redesigned to be nearly as small as an Apple TV, equipped with M4 and M4 Pro chips, and likely removing USB-A ports in favor of modern connectivity options.
- iPad mini: Seventh-generation model with a faster chip, improved front and rear cameras, display fixes, enhanced connectivity, and new color choices.
If the reports hold true, Apple’s upcoming event will bring substantial updates across its Mac and iPad lineups, providing consumers and professionals with enhanced performance and new features. The introduction of the M4 chip marks a significant step in Apple’s ongoing transition to its own silicon, promising faster and more efficient devices.
