Comcast Corporation (formerly registered as Comcast Holdings) is an American communications and media company, based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Comcast was incorporated in 2001 (under the laws of Pennsylvania), and through its predecessors has developed and operated cable systems since 1963.
It is publicly traded on the NASDAQ Stock Market under the stock ticker symbol ‘CMCSA’.
It is one of the world’s largest global media and technology companies, comprised of two primary businesses: Comcast Cable and NBCUniversal.
Operations for Comcast Cable are reported in one reportable business segment, called Cable Communications, and operations for NBCUniversal are reported in four business segments (Cable Networks, Broadcast Television, Filmed Entertainment, and Theme Parks):
Cable Communications – Comcast claims to be America’s largest provider of video, high-speed Internet and voice services (“cable services”) to residential customers. It provides these services under the XFINITY brand. This segment generated 65% of Comcast’s consolidated revenue and 80% of its operating income in fiscal 2013.
Cable Networks – includes the national cable networks, the regional news and sports networks, international cable networks, and cable television production operations.
Broadcast Television – contains the NBC and Telemundo broadcast networks.
Filmed Entertainment – consisting of the studio operations of Universal Pictures, which produces, markets and distributes films and movies.
Theme Parks – includes the Universal theme parks in Orlando and Hollywood.
Time Warner Cable Acquisition
A Comcast Time Warner Cable acquisition worth $45 billion was agreed upon in February, 2014. The acquisition, in which Comcast will pay approximately $158.82 per share for its arch-rival, will allow the company to control more than 75% of the American cable industry.
Comcast currently has around 22 million paying TV customers. The acquisition is estimated to increase the number of subscribers to 33 million.
