The company was founded in 1984 by Michael Dell. Dell was a student at the University at Texas, Austin, and used his college dorm room to build IBM-PC compatible custom computers from stock components.
The first originally designed was produced in 1985 – the Turbo PC. Dell experienced significant success in its first year of operation – generating over $73 million USD.
It is the second largest non-oil company in the state of Texas (after AT&T).
