For people entering the working world or those looking to up their game and find a job in a new sector, what you should wear is a difficult decision to make. Different workplaces have different rules, but how you present yourself is important and it can impact how your colleagues will perceive you.

In this article, we will give you some tips and tricks how to dress at the office to be successful.

Where tradition still rules

In the financial industry, traditional and reserved clothing is still the go-to for many in business.  Sylvie di Giusto, the founder of Executive Image Consulting, told Business Insider, “the more you deal with a client’s money, the more traditional and conservative you should be dressed.”

So, if you work in the corporate world where money is involved, you will probably have to put up with a more traditional outfit.  In the most high-up financial institutions, this means suits for the men and pantsuits or reserved dresses for women.

Of course, these outfits are not for everyone, but usually, in these workplaces, the money is good enough for people to deal with slightly stuffier work attire.

Creative Industries

Many people who work in work in creative or tech-focused industries are usually not the typical suit-wearer. In these environments, you can dress more leisurely and casually.

This doesn’t mean you should dress in a messy way. A smart casual look is a good choice. You can combine blazers in different shapes and colors with jeans or trousers.

If you walk into an office in Silicon Valley, you might see men in jeans, however, they are more likely to be wearing a darker, more expensive jean.

T-shirts are also becoming more popular in the workplace, but it is typically advised to avoid any t-shirts with graphic designs. Instead, clean and neutral tees which can be found online are often a great way to stay relaxed while still looking sharp in the workplace.

Your own style

Many people struggle with balancing their own style while meeting workplace requirements, just try different styles and compare yours with the colleagues.

Many new companies led by younger executives are becoming more lenient and understanding of the style of the time.  A little experimentation never hurt anybody, but it is important to remember the overall goal of presenting yourself well in business.

Showing confidence in your clothing and a casual, clean style can go a long way to giving you a leg up in the workplace and help you reach your career goals.
