Lexus just unveiled its all new high-performance LC 500 coupe at the Detroit auto show on Monday.

The LC 500, which is essentially a road ready coupe version of the LF-LC concept, makes a strong statement about Lexus’ future product direction.

The coupe has a striking and inspiring design, with an athletic aerodynamic shape, sensual curves, and a powerful interpretation of Lexus’ distinctive grille.

Lexus hopes that the coupe’s bold design will help improve the brand’s image and clear the distinction between the Toyota brand and the Lexus brand, as well as position the vehicle as one of its flagship products.
Lexus said in a news release that the LC 500 project “became much more than simply the development of a new coupe.”

“The LC 500, with the shift in engineering processes and design ideologies it represents, symbolizes the beginning of a new phase for the Lexus brand.”

The new LC 500 features the same 5.0-liter V8 engine found in the RC F and GS F, boasting 467 HP and 389 lb.-ft. of torque. It also has a 10-speed transmission system, the first ever in a luxury automobile, which Lexus claims that the transmission system shifts as fast as a dual clutch transmission.

The $100,000 supercar can accelerate from 0-to-60 mph in just under 4.5 seconds – beating the Mercedes SL550.

The LC 500 coupe will go on sale in early 2017.

“The LC 500 has been an important product for Lexus and me personally,” said Akio Toyoda, Chief Branding Officer and Master Driver for Lexus.

“A few years ago, we decided to guide the future of the brand with products that had more passion and distinction in the luxury market. This flagship luxury coupe’s proportions, stunning design and performance make a strong statement about our brand’s emotional direction and will grow the Lexus luxury appeal globally.”

“I was determined to make sure we became a more emotional brand, and that the words ‘boring’ and ‘Lexus’ never showed up in the same sentence,” Toyoda told reporters. “This is a brave, new Lexus.”
