The Samsung Group is a South Korean multinational company with a range of subsidiaries and affiliated businesses – typically using the Samsung brand name.
The company was founded in 1938 by Lee Byung-chull – as a small trading company called “Samsung Sanghoe”. Originally the company produced noodles and sold basic groceries.
After WWII the company began entering other business areas. Lee pushed the company into business, insurance, securities, and retail sectors.
It was not until the 1960s that the Samsung Group entered the electronics industry – forming its own electronics divisions.
In the 1990s the company established itself as an international company, becoming the largest producer of memory chips and the second largest chipmaker (after Intel).
In 2012 Samsung became the world’s largest phone maker (overtaking Nokia) and it is now one of the largest information technology companies in the world.
Samsung’s vision is “dedicated to developing innovative technologies and efficient processes that create new markets, enrich people’s lives and continue to make Samsung a digital leader.”
