Pack appropriately

Even on the hottest days, once the sun goes down, the temperature drops considerably. If you want to sleep outside under the stars, be prepared to layer up.  Even if you sleep in a tent, you’ll need one more layer when night falls. A sun hat is a must, as well as high-intensity sunglasses for the sunset or sunrise hike to and from camp. Be prepared to disconnect

Given the remoteness of the camps and lack of cell phone reception, expect to be disconnected during your stay. No Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, or email alerts. You won’t miss them while enjoying the 360-degree views of the Sahara Desert.

Given the distance to travel from Marrakech and Fez, it’s wise to spend two nights in the desert: one in the camp and one in accommodation on the edge of the dunes. The landscape is mesmerizing, with a changing light throughout the day, which makes it wonderful all day long. Activities such as sandboarding, camel trekking, and picnics in the palm groves can often be arranged, so there is no need to rush back to town.

Standard or Superior Camp

Those who want the basic amenities, including a toilet, will want to pay a little more and stay in a superior camp. While there is a myriad of campsites and options available, especially in Merzouga and more recently in Erg Chegaga, it is worth paying a little more to have your own tent, clean bedding, and decent camels. Although cheap group tours are available for purchase in the busier tourist areas of Marrakech, the vehicles used are often not air-conditioned and reduce distances to a short travel time…
