T-Mobile US, Inc. is an American provider of mobile communications services. The company, based in Bellevue, Washington, is publicly listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the stock ticker symbol ‘TMUS’.
It is the US operating entity of T-Mobile International AG (a holding company for Deutsche Telekom AG’s mobile communications subsidiaries outside Germany).
The company focuses on providing a range of data, wireless voice, and messaging services. It has one of the largest wireless networks in the U.S. market, with a total of approximately 49.1 million customers.
T-Mobile US, Inc. traces its history back to the creation of VoiceStream Wireless PCS (a subsidiary of Western Wireless) in 1994. VoiceStream Wireless seperated from Western Wireless 1999 and in 2001 it was purchased by Deutsche Telekom AG for $35 billion and. In 2002 it was renamed T-Mobile USA.
AT&T tried to purchase T-Mobile USA in 2011 for $39 billion, however, because of legal hurdles the acquisition never went through.
In 2013 T-Mobile merged with MetroPCS Communications, Inc. (the sixth largest carrier in the US at the time) and the combined company was named T-Mobile US, Inc.
