Total S.A. is a French multinational oil and gas company based in Paris. It is one of the six “Supermajor” oil companies, along with BP, Chevron, ExxonMobil, Royal Dutch Shell, and the ConocoPhillips Company.
Total S.A. is active in all aspects of the oil and gas industry, with operations in: refining, exploration, power generation, transportation, distribution, product marketing, and product trading.
The company was formed after World War I, when the French Prime Minister Raymond Poincaré dismissed a plan to form a partnership with Royal Dutch Shell, and instead, decided to create the country’s own oil company.
The company was created in 1924 under the name “Compagnie française des pétroles (CFP)” – which translates into the “French Petroleum Company”.
In 1933 the company opened its first refinery in Normandy. After WWII CFP began exploring for oil in Canada, Venezuela, and Africa.
CFP introduced its brand of gasoline called Total in Africa and Europe in 1954. By 1996 the French government reduced its stake in the company to only 1% and foreign ownership of the firm surged.
In 6 May 2003 the company changed its name to Total.

Upstream – this division of the company focuses on the exploration and production of oil and gas. Total S.A. has oil/gas production facilities in over 30 countries.
Downstream – this area of the company focuses on refining, marketing, trading and shipping of products.
Chemicals – petrochemicals and fertiliser activities.
