VMware, Inc. is a software company based in Palo Alto, California, USA.

The company specializes in providing businesses with IT technologies – particularly cloud and virtualization software.

Diane Greene, Edouard Bugnion, Mendel Rosenblum, Scott Devine, and Edward Wang founded VMware in 1998.

Their first product was the VMware Workstation, which allowed people to set up virtual machines (VMs) on their system and use them simultaneously along with the actual machine – allowing computers to run different operating systems at the same time.

In 2004 VMware became a subsidiary of EMC Corporation. Three years later (in 2007) VMware went public, with EMC issuing 15% of the company’s shares on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol VMW – at $29 USD per share.
