Google Gemini rolling out major upgrade

Thanks to a new upgrade called “Gemini Utilities Extension,” which is rolling out now, Google Gemini is one step closer to becoming a comprehensive virtual assistant. With Gemini Utilities Extension, it can control Android devices and apps.

Google says that the update is on the way, but that it won’t reach everybody with an Android device immediately; it may take a few days.

Pre-upgrade, Gemini relies on text-based interactions. While there are some experimental voice-based features, they are not widely available and are very basic for those who have them.

With the new update, you will be able to use voice commands to control your Android device and apps. Here are some examples of what you will be able to do:

  • Open apps: “Open the camera app” or “Launch YouTube.”
  • Control media: “Pause the music” or “Play the next song.”
  • Adjust device settings: “Turn on Do Not Disturb” or “Increase the screen brightness.”
  • Take actions: “Take a photo” or “Send a text message to John.”
  • Make calls: “Call Dad, Simon…, etc.” or “Call work at 5 PM.”
  • Set reminders: “Remind me to buy milk tomorrow” or “Remind me to call my doctor next week.”
  • Control smart home devices: “Turn on the lights in the living room” or “Set the thermostat to 72 degrees (“22 degrees Celsius).”
  • Translate languages: “Translate ‘Hello, how are you?’ into French.”
  • Set alarms and timers: “Set a timer for 10 minutes” or “Set an alarm for 7 AM tomorrow.”
  • Get information: “What’s the dollar-euro exchange rate now?” or “Tell me a joke.”
  • Control other devices: “Turn off the lights in the bedroom” or “Lock the front door.”

This web page of Gemini Apps Help has a full list of the things you will be able to do after the upgrade.

This will allow for a more hands-free and intuitive way to interact with your smartphone or tablet.

This extension is designed just for smartphones and tablets. Who knows, perhaps in the future, Gemini’s capabilities might expand to other Android devices such as smartwatches or smart TVs.

Gemini vs. Gemini Live

Do not confuse the upgraded Gemini  with the “Gemini Utilities Extension” with Gemini Live. While the former enhances Gemini’s device control capabilities, Gemini Live focuses on natural, real-time voice conversations.

Multiple Requests

Gemini will be able to carry out multiple requests simultaneously, such as “Set a timer for 10 minutes and check the weather” or “Order pizza and play my favorite song.”

If you are a busy parent, student, or professional juggling multiple tasks, this multiple request feature is perfect for you. It allows you to efficiently multitask and save time.

If you have complex queries or requests, this feature can help streamline your interactions with Gemini.

Gemini’s Potential Impact on the Future of AI

Gemini’s new extension heralds a major step forward in the evolution of artificial intelligence (AI).

By seamlessly integrating with Android smartphones and tablets, Gemini has the potential to revolutionize how we interact with technology.

We are still in the early days of the evolution of AI and the benefits it can offer us. Image a future where Gemini can become a fully-fledged personal assistant, organizing appointments, managing finances, or providing recommendations tailored precisely for each user.

Forty years ago, AI was rarely talked about; in fact, most people had no idea what it was. Today, it has become an integral part of many of our lives.

One can only wonder what AI will be like in forty years’ time and how it will improve our lives. Who knows; it may even become a threat!
