PlayStation VR headset listed for £349 by Swiss retailer

The official price of the PlayStation VR headset has not been announced yet. However, a Swiss retailer called ‘Microspot’ has listed the PlayStation VR headset for 498 Swiss francs on its online store – equal to around £349 GBP/ $496 USD.

The retailer also provided a shipping date of 30th June, 2016, for the VR headset. This date is in line with Sony’s previous confirmation that the headset is set to launch in the first half of 2016.

Sony hasn’t provided much information on how much the device will cost.

However, in an interview with Bloomberg last September, Andrew House, head of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI), said that the headset “will be priced as a new gaming platform” – meaning consumers can expect it to cost around the £350 mark.

“VR rewrites the rule book on how you can create games,” House commented. “You’re seeing a large amount of interest and work happening among smaller teams, because it’s possible to create something in VR that is very simple but still very magical.”

It should be noted that this isn’t the first time that an online retailer has given the headset a price tag before any official word on the matter. Amazon Canada previously listed the headset for $1,125 CAD (around $800 USD), which Sony immediately denied.

Katsuhiro Harada, the producer of the Tekken franchise, believes that the PlayStation VR headset won’t cost more than between $300 to $400, which (if true) would make the headset significantly cheaper than the Oculus Rift headset, which was confirmed earlier this week to retail for $599.
