Staples is investigating a potential credit card data breach and has contacted law enforcement officials about the problem. The office supplies company is the latest U.S. retailer to become a possible victim of a cyberattack.

Staples said that if any data discrepancies are found, customers will not be responsible for fraudulent activity on their credit cards if it is reported as soon as possible.

Staples statement

In a statement, spokesman Mark Cautela, said:

“Staples is in the process of investigating a potential issue involving credit card data and has contacted law enforcement,”

“We take the protection of customer information very seriously, and are working to resolve the situation,”

Adding:

“If Staples discovers an issue, it is important to note that customers are not responsible for any fraudulent activity on their credit cards that is reported on a timely basis.”

Staple Inc. shares fell by 22 cents down to $12.08 in premarket trading.

There have recently been a string of hacks that have targeted big corporate retailers, including Home Depot, Target, and Supervalu.

The problem may get worse and hackers penetrating security systems in the United States will only continue unless something drastic is done to improve the quality of data protection.

Cyber security is a rapidly-growing sector. It involves all measures organizations and individuals take to protect their sensitive data and computer systems. The prefix cyber is short for cybernetic(s), which refers to anything related to computers, virtual reality, and some other fields of IT.
