Bombardier Transportation has won a $484 million (€397 million) order to supply 42 double-deck trains from STIF (Syndicat des Transports d’Ile-de-France) and SNCF (Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer français).

According to Bombardier Transportation, the new order adds to the ongoing contract signed four years ago. The new trains, which will operate on Line R in suburban Paris, will start being delivered from September 2017.

SNCF and STIF chose the long eight-car suburban Regio 2N version from the Bombardier Omneo platform of extra-wide double-deck EMUs (electrical multiple units).

The 110-meter-long trains will have five seats per row, three seats on one side of the aisle and two on the other, thus offering greater seating capacity compared to conventional two-storey trains. These trains are designed to operate with three units coupled together, enabling it to carry up to 3,120 passengers, 1,746 of then seated.

Passengers will enjoy wide windows, indirect lighting, and benefit from electrical sockets, as well as a “tube”-style architecture which offers more transparency and security.

Each set of trains is has one carriage equipped for passengers with reduced mobility, including an automatically operated ramp and two areas for wheelchairs. According to Bombardier, the train is 100% Euro-compliant.

“Bombardier is delighted with this breakthrough order for Ile-de-France and Paris suburban network which is a confirmation of the benefits that the Regio 2N fleet can bring in terms of operating costs, comfort and seating capacity.”

Since signing the contract in 2010, ten regions of France have ordered 201 Regio 2N trains with SNCF on behalf of the regions for up to 860 trains. Orders per region are as follows: Ile-de-France : 42, Midi-Pyrénées: 10, Aquitaine: 24, Centre: 14, Brittany: 17, Picardie: 7, Pays de la Loire: 13, Nord-Pas de Calais: 18, Rhône-Alpes: 40, and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’ Azur: 16.

Bombardier Transportaion, with headquarters in Berlin, Germany, is a subsidiary of Montreal-based Bombardier Inc. Since it was founded, it has installed more than 100,000 vehicles globally.
