Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War set box office records with a $640.4 million global opening weekend, according to Disney.

The previous record was held by Universal’s “The Fate of the Furious,” which made $541 million over its global opening last year.

Infinity War brought in $257.7 million in the US and Canada over the three days, Disney said in a press release, making it the biggest opening weekend in the US ever, beating the $248 million that “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” amassed in 2015.

The international opening of $382.7 million is the second highest international opening weekend ever.

This was achieved without a boost from China, the world’s second biggest movie market. Infinity War opens in China on May 11.

Infinity War had an estimated budget between $300m and $400m, making it one of the most expensive films ever made.

The film was directed by brothers Joe and Anthony Russo and features a long list of A-list actors including Robert Downey Jr, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chadwick Boseman and Chris Pratt.

It is the nineteenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and comes following 2012’s The Avengers and 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.

A sequel to the movie is set to be released on May 3, 2019.

Marvel Studios’ 19 releases have now amassed more than $15.48 billion to date.
