UK government to pursue public acquisition of Speciality Steel UK

Published: 15:57, September 15, 2026

The UK Government has begun work towards the public acquisition of Speciality Steel UK, saying the move would keep the future of four sites and more than 1,300 jobs open while it assesses a longer-term plan.

The announcement on 14 September followed the Government’s decision not to support a sale to its preferred bidder. It is a proposal, not a completed purchase, and the Department for Business and Trade said future decisions and spending would be subject to due diligence and paid from existing budgets.

Speciality Steel UK, or SSUK, operates sites in Rotherham, Stocksbridge, Brinsworth and Wednesbury. The company entered liquidation in August 2025 after financial difficulties under previous ownership, according to the Government.

Four sites with specialist capability

The sites have used electric arc furnaces and made specialist steel for aerospace, automotive, defence and advanced manufacturing. The Government listed aircraft landing gear, helicopter rotors, missiles, munitions and artillery casings among products associated with the business.

That industrial capability is the case ministers are making for intervention. The Government says it wants time to consider continued speciality-steel production, regeneration and a future private investment route. It has not announced a production plan, a buyer or a timetable for a return to normal ownership.

Public acquisition would place the state in a more direct position than its funding of the court-appointed Official Receiver during the liquidation. The Official Receiver has maintained site safety and paid staff while the liquidation has continued.

Why the private sale did not proceed

Ministers said a lead bidder had been identified earlier in 2026, but concluded after due diligence and discussions that its proposal could not provide enough long-term stability, certainty or value for money. The statement did not identify the bidder or disclose the terms of the proposal.

Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said the Government would work with local leaders, workers, industry and investors while options remain open. South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard said the decision gave the parties more time to find an outcome for the sites and their workforce.

The Government will now work with the Official Receiver, the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority and local communities on the acquisition proposal. Whether that becomes a public purchase will depend on the due diligence now under way and on the funding choices ministers make within existing budgets.
