Christmas baby boy born in car is delivered by Montreal police

Published: 12:48, December 25, 2014

A baby boy was born on Christmas day in the back seat of a car, with Montreal police officers assisting in the delivery.

A frantic man standing on the sidewalk at 3 a.m. on December 25th waved down a police car in the Ahunstic– Cartierville borough of Montreal.

Const. Jean-Pierre Brabant, a spokesperson for the SPVM (Service de Police de la Ville de Montréal), said the mother was already in the advanced stages of giving birth when the officers arrived. By the time they got to the car the baby’s head was visible.

The two officers remained calm, called for an ambulance and gently encouraged the mother to push.

Even though members of Montreal’s police force are trained in First Aid, this does not include assisting in delivering a baby on the roadside.

CTV News Montreal quoted Mr. Brabant, who said “It was more, I would say, an instinct reaction (on the part of the officers).”

Within a few minutes a healthy (8-week premature) baby boy was born.

The Father, mother with newborn, and his four-year-old brother, then made their way to Sacre Coeur hospital in an ambulance with the police car close behind.

According to Mr. Brabant, mother and baby “are doing well.”
