Swedish furniture chain Ikea is in talks to open a store at the BHS building on Oxford Street, one of London’s prime shopping locations.

According to the Financial Times, someone familiar with the matter said that Retail Acquisitions, which bought the BHS building for £1 back in March, is in talks to sublet the ground floor of the building to Ikea.

In June Ikea announced that it plans on opening new, smaller stores in city centres across the UK.

Earlier this month Ikea opened its first new format ‘order and collection point’ in Norwich and another is planned to open in Aberdeen in Spring next year.

An Ikea spokesperson said:

“Over the coming year we plan to test three order and collection points in the UK, exploring slightly different formats in each selected market.

“We will use these tests as an opportunity to find out more about how customers want to shop with Ikea in these areas.”

Adding:

“We are also exploring a number of other potential locations across the UK, one of which is the current BHS building on Oxford Street.

“While we are seriously considering this opportunity, we have nothing to confirm at this point in time while discussions are ongoing.”
