Chinese tech-giant Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd unveiled its new flagship Huawei P10 and Huawei P10 Plus smartphones.

The new P10 series builds on the success of the P9’s photographic elements, packing more performance and an array of new features.

The P10 is available as a 5.1-inch device with a 1080p display, while there is also a larger, 5.5-inch variant, called the P10 Plus, featuring Wide Quad High Definition (WQHD) resolution.

The phones come with a rear Leica dual-camera set up and Leica front camera, with a 20-megapixel monochrome sensor, 12-megapixel RGB sensor and enhanced fusion algorithms.

A new dedicated portrait mode with 3D facial detection technology, leverages 190 detailed identification nodes for quicker, more accurate feature recognition. If the phone detects an adaptive selfie, it switches to wide-angle mode.

Commenting on the performance of the P10’s portrait feature, Vlad Savov, Verge Senior Editor, said that during his brief time with the P10, he found it did “a reasonable job of identifying and isolating people in my frame, and then blurring out both the foreground and background to focus attention on the subject I’m trying to shoot.”

The front camera aperture has been improved to F/1.9 from the P9’s poorer F/2.4. The rear lens apertures for the P10 remain the same at F/2.2, while the P10 Plus benefits from a higher class of lenses giving it F/1.8 aperture.

A fingerprint sensor has replaced the navigation bar of its predecessor, making the screen view bigger, and making smart touch navigation gestures faster.

The P10’s GPU boasts a 180 percent improvement in performance and a 40 percent increase in power efficiency, thanks to the powerful Kirin 960 processor, an Octa-core (4 x 2.4 GHz A73+ 4 x 1.8 GHz A53), and all-new EMUI 5.1.

The phones are available in a total of eight colour choices, a result of a cross-industry partnership with the Pantone Color Institute, including Greenery, Dazzling Blue, Rose Gold, Prestige Gold, Ceramic White, Mystic Silver, Dazzling Gold and Graphite Black.

The the regular P10 will cost for €649 ($685), while the larger P10 Plus model will retail for €699 ($738).

“As culture and technology continue to intersect in every aspect of our world, we want to deliver new products and experiences that ultimately improve and enhance life,” said Richard Yu, CEO, Huawei Consumer Business Group.

“Our impressive new HUAWEI P10 and HUAWEI P10 Plus weave together the exceptional imaging capabilities of Leica and our stand-out design and hardware innovations to bring users a powerful device experience.”
