Volvo just unveiled its new flagship S90 luxury sedan set to compete with the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz’s new E-Class.
The Swedish sedan was unveiled for the first time earlier this week at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit – highlighting the carmaker’s long term commitment to the North American market.
The S90 will be the first vehicle in North America with semi-autonomous driving technology standard.
“There are strong indications that Volvo is back on track in the US,” said Lex Kerssemakers, Senior Vice President of the Americas at Volvo Car Group. “We expect this strong sales momentum to continue in 2016, helped by the new S90.”
The Swedish carmaker opened its first American factory last year in Berkeley County, South Carolina.
“We have always placed great significance on our presence in the US. That is why we decided to present our S90 to the public for the very first time at the Detroit show, and why we have begun to build a Volvo factory here,” said Håkan Samuelsson, President & CEO of Volvo Car Group.
About the S90, Volvo’s new flagship sedan
The exterior of the new four-door coupé looks beautiful and classy, featuring a non-aggressive face characterised by a concave grille. Inside the S90 there is a T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid powertrain, delivering up to 410 hp.
“We created our new flagship sedan, the Volvo S90, as a real game changer. It is classy and cool. The S90 launches with IntelliSafe Assist as standard, which includes Adaptive Cruise Control, Distance Alert, and the advanced semi-autonomous drive feature, ‘Pilot Assist’.
According to Volvo, the all-new S90 is capable of detecting “pedestrians, cyclists and – a world first – large animals on the road. Your car warns you and, if necessary, brakes if you don’t intervene, even in the dark. It can also work out whether there’s a collision risk if you’re approaching slower moving or stationary vehicles.”
“The S90 has taken a big stride forwards in terms of driving dynamics, performance and ride. We have completely redesigned the Volvo driving experience from the ground up to deliver a sense of precision, engaging control and comfort,” said Dr Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President, Research & Development at Volvo Car Group.
