Microsoft has acquired a young Palo Alto data-focused analytics startup called Metanautix.

The startup was founded three years ago by former Google and Facebook engineers with a vision to integrate the data supply chain by building a data compute engine that enables scalable SQL access to any data.

Metanautix allows companies to connect a diversity of information across private and public clouds, without having to go through the costly and complex process of moving data into a centralized system.

Theo Vassilakis, Co-founder & CEO of Metanautix, said in a blog post: “We look forward to being part of Microsoft’s important efforts with Azure and SQL Server to give enterprise customers a unified view of all of their data across cloud and on-premises systems.”

Joseph Sirosh, Corporate Vice President, Data Group, Microsoft, posted the following on the Microsoft blog:

“In the coming months, we will have more to share about how we will bring Metanautix technology into the Microsoft data platform, including SQL Server and the Cortana Analytics Suite.

“As someone who has led complex, large scale data warehousing projects myself, I am extremely excited about the technology and talent we are bringing to Microsoft with this acquisition. It is another important part of our ongoing efforts to build the intelligent cloud and help our customers fully realize the value of their data.”
