Consumers who have had their eye on the Oculus Rift VR headset will soon be able to preorder the highly-anticipated piece of tech.

Oculus co-founder Palmer Luckey announced via a post on Twitter that pre-orders for the Oculus Rift VR headset will start in the first quarter of 2016.

Mr. Luckey said in a tweet dated December 22: “Preorders are coming soon after new year. Enjoy a stress-free holiday, we won’t launch preorders without warning!”

He went on to post more tweets throughout the day, with one claiming that the manufacturing process is going smoothly and that the company is on target for “an awesome Rift launch” in the first quarter of next year.

There’s been no word on exactly how much the VR headset will cost, but it’s likely going to be quite expensive.

Luckey tweeted the following on the 24th of December: “Reminder of something I have talked about before: VR will become something everyone wants before it becomes something everyone can afford.”

The consumer-ready version of the Rift headset will likely cost much more than the development kit which cost $350. Luckey said: “The cost of development hardware that was sold at a loss using many off-the-shelf components is not a good comparison.”

One Twitter user asked Luckey if the Rift could really compete if it’s not at an affordable range, pointing out that ‘Cardboard’ is $20 and most already have phones. Luckey responded with: “Yes, because the Rift is actually good. Kind of like how fancy wine competes with muddy water.”
