Apple cancels its Airpower wireless charging pad

Published: 22:51, March 30, 2019

Apple has canceled plans to launch its wireless charging pad, Airpower, as it says the product was unable to meet its high standards.

The Airpower was announced in 2017 at an Apple iPhone event as a mat that could wirelessly charge multiple different devices. It was designed so that devices, such as the iPhone, AirPods, or Apple Watch, could be placed anywhere on the mat and simultaneously charge.

At the time, Apple promised a “world-class wireless charging solution” that would launch sometime in 2018.

However, the product missed its 2018 launch date. According to MacRumors, Apple had to delay the launch of the AirPower after difficulties with addressing multi-device charging circuitry, software bugs, and the potential for overheating.

there were evidently some problems with making sure that the product would be reliable and efficient.

In a statement provided to TechCrunch, Apple’s senior VP of hardware engineering, Dan Riccio, said:

“After much effort, we’ve concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project. We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push the wireless experience forward.”
