US investment abroad reached $7.1 trillion in 2025, but the figure is not annual spending

The US direct-investment position abroad rose by $438.1 billion to $7.1 trillion in 2025, while foreign direct investment in the United States rose by $266.0 billion to $5.9 trillion, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The figures measure the value of accumulated ownership claims, not a single year’s flow of new investment.

That difference can be easy to miss. Direct investment occurs when an investor has a lasting interest and a degree of influence over an overseas business, often by owning at least 10% of its voting shares. The position is the total stock of those investments at a point in time.

The BEA said the outward position increased 6.5% from 2024, while the inward position increased 4.8%. Valuation changes, reinvested earnings and new transactions can all alter the total.

Why position and flow are different

Imagine a US manufacturer owning a foreign subsidiary. Its direct-investment position can increase because the company puts new money into the subsidiary, leaves earnings there for future expansion, or because the local currency and asset values change against the dollar.

Conversely, a headline about a new foreign factory in the United States concerns a transaction or project. It may eventually affect the inward position, but it is not the same as the entire $5.9 trillion stock of foreign direct investment in the country.

Direct investment captures the financial ties that allow companies to manage overseas operations, supply chains, technology and sales networks. It includes much more than factories. Financial services, holding companies, energy operations, technology businesses and manufacturing groups can all be part of the totals.

The statistics cannot on their own show whether every investment has created jobs, raised productivity or increased exports. A large position can sit in a holding company, while a smaller project can have a large local employment effect. Country and industry detail is needed before drawing those conclusions.

Why the data matter now

The BEA’s September release arrives as companies reassess supply chains, tariff exposure and the location of new capacity. Direct investment is one measure of how deeply those cross-border links have accumulated.

The outward position remains larger than the inward position, but both grew in 2025. For businesses, the practical message is not simply that capital moves abroad or into the United States. It is that established corporate ownership ties are large enough to shape decisions about production, taxation, financing and trade for years after an individual investment is announced.
