Allianz to buy HSBC Life Singapore for S$2.7 billion

Allianz agreed on Friday to buy HSBC’s life and health insurance business in Singapore for S$2.7 billion, or about US$2.1 billion.

The deal gives the German insurer a larger position in one of Asia’s leading financial centers. It also supports HSBC’s plan to simplify its business and focus on wealth management and wholesale banking.

What the agreement includes

Allianz will acquire 100% of HSBC Life Singapore through its Allianz Asia Holding subsidiary. The companies will also enter an exclusive 15-year insurance distribution agreement.

Under that agreement, HSBC Singapore will continue offering insurance products to its retail banking and wealth customers. Allianz will make an initial S$200 million payment for the distribution arrangement.

The acquisition is expected to close in the first half of 2027. It still requires approval from the Monetary Authority of Singapore.

Why the deal matters

HSBC expects the sale to produce a pre-tax gain of US$1.8 billion. The bank said the transaction is part of a wider effort to concentrate resources on areas where it sees the strongest opportunities for growth.

For Allianz, the deal expands its reach in Singapore and gives it access to HSBC’s established customer network. Allianz said it expects the combined acquisition and distribution agreement to deliver a double-digit return on investment over the medium term.

What happens next

HSBC Life Singapore will remain under HSBC ownership until the transaction is completed. After closing, the insurer will be owned by Allianz and renamed.

Employees will continue working for the insurance business after the sale. HSBC and Allianz said they will work together to provide a smooth transition for staff and customers.
