Google Search pageviews to sites in Chartbeat’s network fell 34% between December 2024 and December 2025, according to its 2026 traffic report. The decline illustrates an exposure businesses need to examine in their own marketing. A supplier can retain a good product while losing access to customers when an outside platform changes how it distributes attention.
The Chartbeat report concerns publishers and other sites in its analytics network. Its percentage is not an estimate of lost sales for retailers or for Market Business News.
Across a different comparison, average weekly total pageviews in that network fell 5.89% from 2024 to 2025. The much larger fall in one referral source shows why businesses should examine where visitors come from as well as the total reaching their websites.
The response requires a financial choice. Building direct customer relationships costs money and time. Continuing to depend heavily on search also leaves the business exposed to changes it cannot decide or predict.
Measure the business attached to each channel
Start with inquiries, orders and customer contribution, the revenue left after the costs that vary with serving that business. A source supplying many visitors may bring little paying demand. Another may send fewer people who are already close to a purchase.
Follow customer groups beyond their first order. Record repeat purchases, cancellations, returns and support requirements. For a company selling services, link an inquiry to the work eventually agreed and the resources needed to deliver it.
Keep acquisition sources and later contacts separate. A customer may first discover the company through search, return through an email and buy after speaking to an employee. Assigning the entire sale to the last contact can conceal the dependence that originally brought the customer in.
Our marketing measurement guide explains how assigning credit differs from estimating additional demand. The same care is needed when deciding whether a new channel is supplying customers who would otherwise have arrived through another route.
Estimate what a reduction in search-sourced business would do to revenue, contribution and cash receipts. State how quickly costs could fall and how much spending would be needed to replace the lost demand. This is a scenario for planning, not a forecast that traffic will fall by a particular amount.
Give customers a reason to return directly
An email address is a means of contact, not evidence of a lasting customer relationship. A newsletter needs a reason to be read, and the person receiving it needs to have agreed to that contact.
A supplier might provide product updates, maintenance information or ordering reminders relevant to an existing customer. A publisher might offer a clearly defined briefing. A service business might maintain reference material that clients use repeatedly.
Choose the content according to the customer’s recurring task. Collecting addresses without deciding what will be sent can produce a list that is expensive to maintain and easy to ignore.
Keep account access, saved information and repeat ordering easy to find. The website should help returning customers finish the activity that brought them back. Related material should answer a connected question, rather than add more pages to a visit for its own sake.
Measure the costs of creating and maintaining these services. Repeat visits alone do not pay for an extra employee, new software or a publication schedule. Compare the spending with retained customers, additional orders or another defined source of revenue.
Assess AI visibility without treating it as revenue
AI search creates another route between a business and its audience. It can display a brand or answer without sending someone to the original website.
A Pew Research Center analysis of March 2025 browsing by 900 US adults found clicks on traditional Google result links in 8% of visits with an AI summary, compared with 15% without one. The analysis was observational, and the types of searches producing summaries differed. It cannot isolate the effect of adding a summary to an otherwise identical search.
For a business, a mention, a referral and a sale remain different events. Track them separately where the available information allows. A growing number of AI referrals can be promising while still representing a small part of the customer pipeline.
Google’s documentation says no special AI optimization or additional markup is required for its AI search features. It also says appearances in those features are included in overall Web performance reporting in Search Console, the service used to monitor a site’s Google search performance.
That combined reporting limits what a business can infer from a single traffic chart. Review actual inquiries and orders alongside visibility, and keep source information accurate so customers can verify what a search answer tells them.
Diversification should proceed at a pace the business can afford. Test an additional route, measure the customers retained or acquired, and include the work required to maintain it. A replacement channel that depends on another platform can spread exposure without removing it; direct customer relationships still require continuing service to remain worth using.
